UK and Germany invest ÂŁ14M in joint R&D to strengthen the future quantum supply chain
The UK’s National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and Germany’s Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) are joining forces in a £14 million quantum technology initiative focused on research, development and standardization.
The investment targets critical areas such as metrology, quantum sensing, and communication systems, all considered essential to national security and economic competitiveness in the coming decade. Collaborative progress aims to ensure interoperability of devices and unify measurement strategies — a major challenge as the industry rapidly expands.
By aligning strategic infrastructure and talent development, the two nations seek to secure their positions as global leaders while reducing dependency on foreign supply chains. Efforts include boosting partnerships between universities, startups, and high-tech manufacturers.
Conclusions:
Europe’s approach highlights a key insight: quantum success is not only about building qubits — it is about building ecosystems. Standardization and cross-border cooperation will define which regions lead the coming technological wave.
